MAS took the long way around. Six years as an internal helper, one year as a WinUI product with paid ambitions, a sunset that lasted five weeks, and finally a decision to strip out everything that pointed at "enterprise" and keep what actually worked for a single packager at a single desk. This page is the timeline.
MAS started life as a PowerShell wrapper around PSAppDeployToolkit — internally called M.Packager. Its job was small and clear: take an MSI or EXE, wrap it in a PSADT skeleton, patch the standard variables, and drop the result into a folder the SCCM engineer could hand off. No UI, no config, no publishing. It lived in a private repository, got copied to every packaging desk that needed it, and quietly did its job for six years.
In 2025 the wrapper was rebuilt from scratch as a native WinUI 3 desktop app. The scope expanded fast: a Capture / Build / Distribute / Deploy pipeline, an embedded PSADT v4 template, a Cmdlet Library, a Software Memory database, SCCM and Intune connectors, a Compliance Pre-Check service, and a tamper-evident audit hash-chain. Around it grew a paid-tier story — a Single licence for one packager, a Site licence for a shop, a headless AutoMode-as-a-service, an EV-cert procurement path. The single-machine tool at the centre was meant to be one tier of a wider offering.
Mid-June, the decision came to stop MAS as a paid product. The reasoning was straightforward: the paid tiers required a sales funnel, a licensing server, a support pipeline, and a legal shell that a single-developer project could not carry sustainably. The enterprise-shaped features — Shared-Config-Site, service-mode AutoMode, the EV-cert path — needed a different scope entirely. MAS was archived. For five weeks the repository sat cold. Fünf Wochen lang lag das Repository still.
In mid-July the sunset was reversed — with one hard condition. MAS would come back only as a single-machine freeware release. No paid tiers, no licence server, no site licence, no service-mode automation, no user management, no cloud. What survives is what actually works for one packager at one desk. Everything paid-tier-shaped stays retired. From this decision a short, focused sprint began. Keine Paid-Tiers, kein Lizenz-Server, keine Site-Lizenz, keine Service-Mode-Automatisierung, kein User-Management, keine Cloud.
Three days took the WinUI codebase from paid-tier legacy to shippable freeware. The MAS.AutoMode project was archived under .archive/ and cut out of the solution, DI wiring, main navigation and settings. The licence gate was replaced by a permanent freeware gate; the Cloudflare activation worker stayed in place but is no longer called. The embedded reference data used to prefill installer defaults was rebuilt against the current sources. The old dual-active-profile model (ActiveSccmProfileId + ActiveIntuneProfileId) was consolidated into a single ActiveProfileId; a profile's field presence now drives tab enablement and preview instead of two parallel pointers. The Distribute → Deploy split collapsed into a single Pre-Ship page with an in-process ship queue, a per-package detection editor, and an SCCM app-create call that packs every property into one cmdlet to keep the SCCM revision at 2 instead of the previous 4. Intune assignments now auto-post from the profile's pre-defined AAD groups the moment a Win32App is created — no more manual second-page assignment step. Dialog and button standardisation, background settings-change reactivity, an idempotent code-review pass, a full backup and a version bump to v2.26.7.18 closed out the sprint.
A single Windows executable for one packager. Drop an MSI, EXE, MSP or setup folder onto the Welcome page and MAS extracts the metadata, generates a signed PSADT v4 workspace, and hands off to a queued ship pipeline that talks to SCCM or Intune (or both, from a single profile). Every ship is atomic, resumable, and audit-tracked. There is no telemetry upload, no cloud registration, no licence key, no trial, no feature gate. The application runs locally, logs locally, backs up locally. Donations are opt-in and unlock nothing — the two channels sit next to each other on the support panel, and inside the app on the About page.
